If you ever crossed paths with Wonny, even briefly, you know that smile.

We celebrated the life of Wonny Anthony Kerr this morning, a faithful and much-loved member of Saint Mark’s Church. Over 100 people attended the service. Wonny’s three daughters, Keddis, Nicolan, and Alexis, delivered a beautiful tribute to their father, telling his life history. Born in Jamaica, fourth of ten children, he learned the culinary arts there and began a career on Royal Caribbean as a line chef onboard. He met and married the love of his life in Jamaica, Imogene McIntosh, and they migrated to the US in 1989. Last April 18th marked their 42nd anniversary.

Wonny was a longtime member of Saint Mark’s choir and they turned out for his memorial. It was especially wonderful to hear music in our church again! Wonny’s granddaughter, Khloe, read her poem “Grandpa, My Hero” and his grandsons, Damani, David and Jahmari were all in attendance. Father Johan Johnson invited friends to speak of their memories of Wonny. Every one mentioned his joy, his energy, his infectious positive outlook. Colleagues spoke of  how the residents and workers valued him throughout almost 30 years at Wynmoor Community Council, where he became the Facility’s Director. Friends remembered how devoted he was at Saint Mark’s, in the Men’s Club, the choir, even working here for many years. He set an example of living life to the fullest while living up to the Christian ideals we all strive for:  helping others, bringing joy, shining a light.

On May 7, 2021, Wonny was taken back to God, while doing what he loved, fishing. In his last moments he was seen handing out life vests, saving others. Wonny will be remembered and dearly missed by his beautiful family, the parishioners here at Saint Mark’s, and indeed everyone who knew him. It was truly a blessing to know him. Please keep his family in your prayers.
