A Message from the Vestry
Summer is in full swing, and Fr. Grant is taking some well-deserved vacation time to renew and recharge. So, we thought that this was a good opportunity for Mike Mullins; Senior Warden, and Ken Arruda; Junior Warden, to provide an update on the work of Vestry.
Renovations to the Ministry Center are in progress. The Mommy’s Morning Out program is being phased out, and will be combined with the school’s Pre-K program on the east side of the building. Fr. Grant’s new office is now located at the front of the building, and next to his office will be a new configurable meeting space and kitchenette to better accommodate the needs of the Guild, ECW, Book Club, and other ministries. The kitchen of the Parish Hall will be spruced up to better support the larger group meetings and coffee hours. We also hope to use the kitchen to support a revitalized ministry to provide soups, stews, and casseroles to deliver to parishioners who may be recovering from illness. We expect the work to be completed in August.
As you know, our Stewardship Campaign for Fiscal Year 2024 is in full swing. In the next couple of weeks, we will share the financial results for the 2023 fiscal year. Early indications show that although we have revenue shortfalls, our financial position is moving in the right direction. We are in the process of developing the 2024 budget. The reality is that while we are doing a good job of managing our expenses, we have been operating under a bare-bones budget since the time of the COVID pandemic years. We hope to develop a right-sized budget that provides funding and resources for pastoral care (visits to homes and facilities to administer the Eucharist), Episcopal Education (e.g., Confirmation classes), new ministries (e.g., laundry services for those in need), expansion of our service to the community (e.g., Food), and resources to coordinate the work of the Church and our ministries.
So we ask that if you have not made your pledge, now would be a great time to do so. If you did not receive an email with pledge information, you can click here and make your pledge online.
Your Vestry is here to serve you. As your wardens, please let us know if you have any questions, share input, would like to talk, or have suggestions for future communications.
Thank you,

Sunday’s Gospel; Matthew 13-24, 36-43; It’s Raining Cats and Dogs!
We have surely experienced recent frequent and heavy rains, but I haven’t noticed any animals falling midst the raindrops. No! Cats and dogs” has a deeper symbolic meaning. In this Sunday’s gospel, Jesus himself describes dramatically the symbolism of the parable of the weds. Much of scripture symbolizes profound eternal truths which comprise divine wisdom. Let’s commit ourselves to weekly Bible study and Christly living. (Norm Carroll)

From The Music Department!

|
This Sunday, July 23rd we are so fortunate to have as our guests the string quartet, Quartett Orfeo, from Rome, Italy. They are here in the States and South Florida for only a week as part of a Cultural Exchange Program, and we are fortunate to have them in our sanctuary at the very beginning of their run. This marvelous Quartet will be performing throughout the area during their stay. In fact, on the afternoon of the 23rd, they will be doing a full concert with the Music for America String Orchestra just down the street from us at the UCC Church in Fort Lauderdale. So anyone interested in attending that concert is welcome. It is a very special opportunity.
Last Sunday, the choir was at its peak with their performance of, Soon Ah Will Be Done. My worries about a Summer choir were unfounded. The members of our parish chancel choir sing with intelligence and passion, a very necessary combination to make music. Music without passion is just notes . . . Bravo!
I am so honored to be able to work with all these marvelous people with the support of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church and its wonderful leaders from Father Grant through all the programs and ministries.
(Gordon Roberts, Music Director)
Thank you, Gordon Roberts!
Gordon arranged for the Quartett Orfeo to perform at our 10:30 am service. Gordon is also sponsoring their visit. Thank you to Gordon and the Chancel Choir for sharing their talent and love of music with Saint Mark’s parishioners and guests.
Saint Mark’s Book Club via Zoom – 7/27!
During the summer months Saint Mark’s Book Club meets on the fourth Thursday via Zoom. On July 27th at noon, we will discuss The Silent Builder by Marilyn Weigold. If you are unable to obtain the book from the library ( it is available from Amazon), an alternative is The Engineer’s Wife by Tracy Emerson Wood. They both tell the same fascinating story of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge shortly after the Civil War. Either book will suffice for our discussion. Contact Terry Gaw; tagaw@aol.com if you need the zoom meeting link with the ID and password. (Terry Gaw)

Congregational Care at Saint Mark’s
While there are certainly times where a priest is the appropriate caregiver, or perhaps is someone specifically requested, the responsibility for ‘the love and care of one another’ is bestowed on each of us by baptism and commandment, and not by ordination. Congregational care is provided when faithful people are present and listening compassionately while the faith of others is being tested; and also, when we can utilize our ‘spiritual’ gifts and acquired skills to address someone’s ‘temporal’ needs. In so doing, we are preaching, practicing, and personifying Christ’s unconditional love. If God has placed upon your heart a desire to grow this ministry, please seek out a member of your Vestry and share your thoughts on how best to proceed, and how you can contribute.
Father Grant can be reached by email at gwiseman@saintmarks.com, or at 954-334-0131. Our congregation can be reached by contacting the church office . . . seeking your input.
We invite you to post on our church website blog, https://saintmarksftl.com/submit-post/, which helps us keep up with the sharing of information. All information will be reviewed and considered for posting on the church website, Facebook page, and Instagram, as well as in this Parish News.
